Udyam Registration is the online MSME registration system introduced by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with effect from 1 July 2020. It replaces the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum and is now the only valid form of MSME registration in India. Udyam is fully paperless, free of cost, and requires only the Aadhaar number of the proprietor in case of a proprietorship, or of the managing partner or director in case of a partnership, LLP, or company, along with the PAN of the enterprise.

Once filed, the Udyam Registration is processed through automated linkages with the Income Tax and GST databases, classifying the enterprise as Micro, Small, or Medium based on the combined criteria of investment in plant and machinery and annual turnover. A unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) is generated and a digital certificate is issued. The Udyam certificate is permanent — there is no renewal — but the enterprise is required to update key details whenever the classification thresholds are crossed, either upward or downward.
