RUN — Reserve Unique Name — is the MCA web service used to reserve a company name. While RUN is well known as a step in incorporating a new company, it is equally the route an existing company uses to reserve its proposed new name when it decides to change its registered name.

Changing an existing company's name is a defined process under Section 13 of the Companies Act, 2013, and RUN is its first formal step. The company passes a board resolution proposing the new name, files a RUN application to reserve it, and — once the name is approved — passes a special resolution, files it with the Registrar, and obtains a fresh certificate of incorporation. The RUN stage is critical: if the proposed name is not distinctive or conflicts with an existing name or trademark, the whole change stalls here.
